Gallipoli: Guide
Gallipoli, chamada Gelibolu em Língua turca|turco moderno, é uma cidade no noroeste da Turquia. O nome deriva do Língua grega|Grego Kallipolis, significando "Cidade bonita". Situa-se na península de Gallipoli (Gelibolu Yarimadasi), com o Mar Egeu ao oeste e o estreito de Dardanelos a leste.
Na Austrália e Nova Zelândia, Gallipoli é o nome dado à campanha aliada na península durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, mais conhecida no Reino Unido como a Campanha de Dardanelos, e na Turquia como a Batalha de Çanakkale. Tratou-se de uma tentativa dos aliados de avançar pelo estreito de Dardanelos e tomar Constantinopla. Em 25 de abril de 1915, as forças arrmadas da Austrália e da Nova Zelândia (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, ANZAC) desembarcaram em uma pequena baía na ponta oeste da Península (hoje denominada oficialmente Garganta de Anzac). A campanha terminou em desastre, com os Anzacs sendo evacuados em 19 de dezembro de 1915. Houve em torno de 180 000 mortos aliados e 220 000 mortos do lado turco. Essa campanha tornou-se um "mito fundador" tanto para a Austrália quanto para a Nova Zelândia, e o Anzac Day ainda é comemorado como feriado nos dois países. Diversas lembranças da campanha de Gallipoli podem ser vistas no museu do Memorial de Guerra Australiano em Canberra, Austrália.
A campanha de Gallipoli também deu um impulso à carreira de Mustafa Kemal Ataturk|Mustafa Kemal, um comandante desconhecido do exército turco que ultrapassou sua autoridade e desobedeceu ordens a fim de conter o avanço aliado e, eventualmente, fazê-los recuar. Mustafa Kemal, que trocou seu nome para Kemal Atatürk, tornou-se o fundador do Estado Turco moderno após o colapso do Império Otomano.
